What does the new version of Dr. Spock look like?
When chaos reigns at home, frazzled parents can now call professional certified parent coaches. In the past, Dr. Spock’s baby book and extended family were parents’ main sources for help and guidance. In today’s challenging atmosphere and mobile society, child care literature and family connections may not always be enough or even available to help. That is why Certified Parent coaches Connie Hammer from Round Pond, Maine and Cathi McGrevey from Hooksett, New Hampshire are combining their efforts to provide a dynamic option to parents. The life enhancements and achievements which executive, career and life coaches have brought to the working world are now available through hiring parent coaches. Unlike quick fixes offered by TV shows and magazines, parent coaches build intentional supportive partnership for parents who may need guidance navigating family life in today’s stressful environment. “Parents look to their coach to help them realize (that) they are empowered and can find an authentic voice in making decisions about raising their children”, says Cathi McGrevey.
“Coaching was a great fit for me. It was my salvation!” states one of Connie Hammer’s previous clients. She had recently relocated to New England with her husband and was trying to juggle being a new mom with a new life and a new job. This client’s parents and in-laws lived on the west coast and so did most of her friends. Despite the fact that they were only a phone call away, this woman was hesitant to confide in them about her situation and the challenges she faced. “My parents never really approved of my marriage and my husband’s parents expected perfection from the mother of their grand-child. I was so stressed and didn’t know where to turn. Coaching turned out to be the smartest thing I could have done.” this mom affirmed.
Both Connie Hammer and Cathi McGrevey received their graduate level certification from the Parent Coaching Institute in partnership with Seattle Pacific University. This is the only certified parent coaching program in the nation. They are both members of the International Association of Coaches as well as founding members of the PCI Certified Parent Coaches of New England. Connie Hammer brings over fifteen years experience as a Licensed Master Social Worker in the human services and educational fields. She holds a step-parent coach certification through the Step-Family Foundation of New York. She has especially enjoyed coaching expectant couples and step-parents. Cathi McGrevey holds a MS in Human Services, and is a fine arts adjunct instructor with Southern New Hampshire University. Connie and Cathi are also available to conduct workshops and seminars on a variety of child development topics. They enjoy coaching parents who look to balance work, family, and personal fulfillment.
From the website, www.theprogressiveparent.com, parents can better understand the many ways coaching can help them optimize their child’s potential. Connie Hammer added, “The choices parents make do make a difference in their children’s lives, and having a sounding board such as a parent coach, can help bring a level of mindfulness to their parenting decisions”. A 45 minute weekly coaching conversation can be done from the convenience of your own home by phone or in person. Both parent and coach identify priorities and discover family strengths in which to build upon. Coaching helps articulate the family’s dream and designs constructive action steps to attain their preferred future. Usually within two to three months the parent and family are expressing a greater sense of joy and ease in the home
